Planning in the Dark: Presidential Perspectives on Reimagining the Undergraduate Experience for Fall 2020
For higher education leaders, planning for fall is never straightforward but nothing is certain about fall 2020. The severity of the pandemic, whether campuses can re-open and under what restrictions, student appetite for remote alternatives, and the state of institutional finances are dynamic unknowns forcing schools to plan for the most pivotal moment in the academic year largely in the dark. But schools need to make decisions and they need to make them now. Higher education leaders want to understand student sentiment but students look to schools for clarity on what fall will look like.
Certainty may be in short supply but sharing ideas and perspectives can only help. Join us for a conversation with Neumann University President Chris Domes, Simmons University President Helen Drinan, Charter Oak State College President Ed Klonoski, and Eduventures Chief Research Officer Richard Garrett. These institutions have worked hard to stand up remote instruction over the past two months (Charter Oak is an online institution) and are now piecing together fall plans that must be realistic, sustainable and appealing to students, faculty and staff.

Chris Domes
President, Neumann University
With nearly 35 years of accomplishments in higher education, Chris has led initiatives in strategic planning, fundraising, academic program expansion, enrollment management, community relations, technology access, and campus growth, and most notably, a strong proponent of Catholic Franciscan education. Prior to becoming President of Neumann, Chris served as President of Silver Lake College. He holds an EdD in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University, and two degrees from St. Bonaventure University: an MSEd in Counseling Psychology and a BA in History and Secondary Education.
Helen Drinan
President, Simmons University
Under Helen’s leadership, Simmons has achieved university status, simplified its academic structure to enhance interdisciplinary study by creating four colleges, completed the largest fundraising campaign in its history ($100 million), welcomed the two largest freshman classes in its history, reconfigured its undergraduate curriculum around leadership development, developed world-class coed online graduate degree programs, and cemented its status as a premier institution for women scholars.
Ed Klonoski
President, Charter Oak State College
Ed has held this position since 2008. Prior to this, he was the Executive Director of Board for State Academic Awards, the President of the Connecticut Distance learning Consortium and the Director of Information Technology at Charter Oak State College.
